Mbaise, Nigeria, December 2010: ECUDOMEF organized and implemented a heath fair project in Amuzi, Mbaise health center. This project was in collaboration with Women Development and Comunity Health Projects (WDCHP), Community Self-Help Initiative and Association of Volunteers in the International Service. The major goal of the Health-fair was to increase healthcare access to the underprivileged members of the community. The opening ceremony was performed by Dr IG Onyeocha who is a Board of Trustees member. The program was an all day affair and those in attendance benefitted from various health education and training, cervical cancer screening, blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. Hand washing demonstrations were also made (see above picture of Prof. Edward Oparaoji showing this). Several doctors were on hand to assess, diagnose and treat common ailments like malaria and worm infestation and medications were given out in one month supply packages by the pharmacists.
In addressing the almost 200 women participants, Professor (Mrs) Viola Onwuliri (picture on left), of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) stated “While we tend to be more concerned about others, it is essential that, as the fiber that holds our family together, we must develop the habit of taking good care of ourselves. Basic things, like we went through here today can go a long way to prevent and delay major illness and prolong life. ECUDOMEF and the other NGOs involved with the fair are committed to ensuring better quality of life for you and family.”
